Q. I want to meet a friend for dinner who will be driving from San Antonio, Texas. I will be driving from Houston. What would be the best town along interstate 10 to meet at? I can't really get a good sense from Map-quest of Google Maps about this. Any thoughts?

A. There are no trains. I love trains, but not happening. Bus or plane. You can take a bus from San Antonio to Mexico City and then from there to Tapachula, the border on the Pacific side. Last August, I took the bus from Panama City to Tapachula, the border of Mexico. I had every intent to continue on to Mexico City but my traveling companion became very ill. The rest of the trip was canceled. The buses are not bad. They are comfortable and air conditioned. They have rest rooms. They stop for meals and sometimes stop to let a vendor on who will go from row to row and sell sandwiches and drinks, then get off. I'm wondering if it's easy to get to the base from San Antonio's city center without having to rent a car. Bus 65 takes you to Lackland, and 611, 612, 613, 614, and 615 take you by there. I suggest that you take a taxi from time to time or have one of his friends' parents or friends drive you around a bit. It's a bit of a hike. As far as downtown goes... All the tourist attractions are really close together, so you'll have no problem.

A. It might be rainy right now but in April it will be freaking hot, like it always is. Bring shorts, tank tops and a swimsuit. You'll want to dress in light clothes to help you stay cool. As for things to do, there are tons! The riverwalk is always lovely but there's also Fiesta Texas, Sea World, tons of museums (the McNay is great), the zoo ...it totally depends on what you're in to. For shopping I recommend The Forum or Quarry Market. If you want to go over to New Braunfels (about 30 minutes from N SA) then you can go to Schlitterbahn. :)
