What is the best way to get around San Diego?
Q. I'm planning to go to San Diego with 2 of my friends and since we are going via Amtrak, we need some way to get around San Diego for the entire day. We are arriving at the San Diego Amtrak Station and I was wondering what type of transportation would be the most cost-effective for the three of us. Also, since we do not know San Diego too well, I would greatly appreciate it if you leave any suggestions on where to visit or any activities we can do during our trip. Oh and if there are some MUST eat San Diego restaurants, it would be great if you guys could name some. Thanks! I forgot to add, for transportation methods, it would be great if you guys can add the price for like an all day pass or whatever. Thanks!

A. Of coarse you HAVE to see the "Plymouth rock" of the west coast! Presidio Hill and the Serra Museum Followed by "Old Town" and while in "Old Town" there is a Mexican restaurant there (the name escapes me but there's only one) that is cheap and GOOD. I might inject here that as far as Mexican food goes, California, San Diego in particular, has at LEAST as good but probably better than Mexico itself. Mission Bay is a must especially if you like boating, Sea World, the ZOO and the Balboa Park museums. And if you still need more San Pasqual has a Wild Animal Park that is great. They have a tram system in SD that takes you close to almost anywhere you want to go, unless it has drastically changed lately, it's fairly safe.

Q. San Diego is very different then the mid west as far as gardening goes. I'm on a fixed income & can't aford to waste my money. Garden centers here in Illinois rip you off when you have a question, because they only want to see you something. Is there a place in San Diego where I can find out about local garden news without trying to sell me something?

A. San Diego has the best climate in the country. It's a major tourist destination and they know how to treat visitors right. Some must see attractions are the world famous Zoo, Sea World, and Balboa Park. Balboa Park is the largest urban cultural park in the country. You can get a park passport which allows you entry to a dozen museums as well as the zoo. It's the best zoo in the world and the museums are all unique. My favorite museum is the San Diego Model Railroad Museum. It has some of the world largest model train layouts. Also in Balboa Park is the Speckles Organ Pavilion. It is the largest outdoor pipe organ in the world. They give free concerts on Sundays. At this time of year the Sea World Tower is decorated like a giant… [cont.]

What are good neighborhoods in San Diego to raise a family?
Q. I am considering a job that is located in the Gaslamp district of San Diego. We would be renting, and I am specifically looking for a very short commute. I know there are some great family-oriented spots in North County (like Poway & San Marcos), but what about near downtown? I'm posting this in the Parenting category in hopes that I'll get responses from other parents of young children in San Diego. Thanks!

A. Both the zoo and the Wild Animal Park are great. I'd recommend driving to the top of Mt. Soledad in La Jolla for a panoramic view of the coastline and the city skyline. Georges Outdoor Terrace Bistro in La Jolla has the best view. Make reservations so that you are at a good table and time it so you are dining during the sunset. It's truly spectacular. Also...have a bonfire on the beach. Roast marshmallows. For more info on these and other San Diego things visit

A. Go to the zoo. The Wild Animal Park is a valley that's set up to look like an African plain, where the animals can roam around in a somewhat natural habitat. You could wander around for quite awhile at the Wild Animal Park and just see a bunch of native African species of shrubs or something like that, without seeing any animals. Also, someone mentioned the tram. They shut that down last year, because it was getting old and unreliable (it kept breaking down, stranding people in the middle of the park for hours). The zoo is full of various exhibits that are packed together into a smaller park. It is hilly. But, you can start at the top and work your way to the bottom of the zoo, and then take a long escalator back up to the top. The zoo… [cont.]

A. It shouldn't take more than 3 to 4 days... you should contact the postmaster in San Diego. It sounds to me like there is a problem with the delivery and the mail carrier. The post office won't be able to do much, so I would recommend to spend the extra cash and use UPS or FedEx.

How long is the drive from San Diego to Burbank?
Q. My family and I will be visiting San Diego around Thanksgiving. We decided to book a Warner Brothers Tour in Burbank and we must be there by 10 am on a Tuesday morning. What time should we leave our hotel in Old Town, San Diego. Any recommended routes?
Asked by fotogirl77 - Sat Nov 15 13:19:03 2008 - - 5 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It is about 135 miles more or less. At time traffic can be very bad in Burbank. It would be best to allow plenty of time, more than enough. If it were I, I would allow 4 hours just to make sure; but I am a pessimist. One time on a Sunday no less I got stuck on the Ventura Freeway north of LA and did not move for an hour. I finally got off at the first exit I came to. It was terrible. Just head up I-5 until you get to Burbank. Take 134 west to exit 3 then to W. Riverside Dr. heading west. It is about 1 mile down Riverside after the exit.

A. it most likely wont be cold, summer has not fully kicked in yet in the coast and it's already going to be August, so it will be a long Fall and the warm weather will stick around till probably late Nov early Dec, so it will most likely be nice, bring alittle bit of both kinds of clothes, summer and fall (e.i light sweater, jeans, shorts t's, etc.) it's unpredictable, but the hot temp. is yet to come. The water remains chilly year round, also it's important to know that regardless of where you are in the planet and there is sun, even if it's during the winter, you should still wear sunscreen.

Q. We want to go to Sea World and San Diego Zoo next year as early as possible. After the winter, what month does it start to warm up? How cold does it get in San Diego?
Asked by Brianna'sMomma - Tue Nov 6 13:50:06 2007 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments

A. Spring is kind of cool in SD in my opinion. Winter and Spring temps can vary depending on the weather, it will either be somewhat cool and in the 60's or warm and sunny and in the 70's and 80's when there are Santa Ana winds or any slight offshore flow. Mid-May to Mid-June is probably one of the worst times of year for weather along the coast. We call it "May Gray" and "June gloom" b/c the weather pattern at the time of year produces a thick marine layer and it's overcast a lot. Late June through Novemember are the warmest times of year in SD. The coldest it gets at night near the coast in SD is usually around 50. The days are usually in the 60's and 70's.

I have to get from Boston to San Diego in 7 days. How long and how far do we need to drive each day?
Q. I am driving cross country from Boston to San Diego because I am moving to San Diego. Some friends are coming along for the ride who have to get back to work in Boston by a certain time. We leave Oct. 21 and we need to get to San Diego no later than 10/28. We are driving the southern route I believe, going from 84 to 81 to 40 all the way. How many miles/hours should we drive each day to make that deadline but also stay safe? I will also have a U-Haul trailer attached to my car so can only go so fast. I would also like to sleep each night. Also, should we reserve motel rooms each morning or wait until we get to our destination each night? Will the motels charge if we cancel within 24 hours? Any advice about this and road trips… [cont.]
Asked by jackiediperna - Mon Oct 16 14:28:03 2006 - - 6 Answers - 0 Comments

A. It all depends on the drivers. Pick up the Travelers magazine at the rest areas and use the coupons. 81 will get hilly in North Carolina, especially with a u-haul. This time of year you will probably get fog at night. 40 is fine, except for severe t-storms at times until you get through Texas. You can do it in 4 - 5 days. Just allow for weather and traffic. 600 miles a day max, I would say.

You can go over, rent a cart for an hour and see the whole place,,get something to eat at a great seafood cafe, go back across the channel at sunset. It will be something you will never forget!!
