It has also some male derivates such as: Antonis, Antoñito, Antonino, Antonello, Tonio, Toño, Toñín, Tonino, Nantonio, Totò, Tó or Toni. The Portuguese equivalent is António or Antônio. In old Portuguese the form Antão was also used. The Greek version of the name is Antonios.
The name derives from Antonius Antonius was the nomen of the gens Antonia, one of the most important plebeian (meaning not patrician) families of ancient Rome. The family claimed descendancy from Anton, a son of the Greek god Hercules. Women of the family carried the name Antonia, according to the Roman naming convention. The Antonii produced several important Roman generals, a well known Latin family name, probably of Etruscan origin. Antonius has been said to derive from the Ancient Greek God "Adonis". This, however, is quite unlikely, since the Greek letter "δ" (delta) is equivalent to the Latin letter "d" and there is no recorded transformation of "δ" or "d" to "nt". The roman general Marcus Antonius held that the origin of the name was Anthon, son of Hercules. This myth, recorded by Plutarch Plutarch, born Plutarchos then, on his becoming a Roman citizen, Lucius Mestrius Plutarchus (Μέστριος Πλούταρχος), c. 46 – 120 AD, was a Greek historian, biographer, essayist, and Middle Platonist known primarily for his Parallel Lives and Moralia. He was born to a prominent family in Chaeronea, Boeotia, a town about twenty, was probably created by Marcus Antonius himself, in order to claim divine parentage. The name was spread around European countries and languages because of Saint Antonios. Later, at the era of colonization, it was spread all around the world due to introduction to Christianity of the invaded indigenous populations (i.g. Americas, Africa, Asia)
The name is widely used in Italy, in Portugal and in Spain. After the Iberic peoples The Iberian Peninsula is located in the extreme southwest of Europe and includes modern-day states Portugal, Spain, Andorra, the British Overseas Territory of Gibraltar and a very small area of France. It is the westernmost of the three major southern European peninsulas—the Iberian, Italian, and Balkan peninsulas. It is bordered on the discovered the new world The New World is one of the names used for the Western Hemisphere, specifically the Americas. When the term originated in the late 15th century, the Americas were new to the Europeans[note], who previously thought of the world as consisting only of Europe, Asia, and Africa . The term "New World" should not be confused with "modern, many of them settled in the area, and, as a consequence, Antonio is one of the most popular first names in Latin America, as well as among Hispanics Hispanic is a term that originally denoted a relationship to the ancient Hispania (geographically coinciding with the Iberian Peninsula). During the modern era, it sometimes takes on a more limited meaning, relating to the contemporary nation of Spain, and, to a small degree, North Americans in the United States.
