Citizenship status, under social contract theory, carries with it both rights and responsibilities. "Active citizenship" is the philosophy that citizens should work towards the betterment of their community through economic participation, public service, volunteer work, and other such efforts to improve life for all citizens. In this vein, schools in some countries provide citizenship education. National citizenshipGenerally citizenship is seen as the relation between an individual and a particular nation. In ancient Greece, the main political entity was the city-state, and citizens were members of particular city-states. In the past five hundred years, with the rise of the nation-state, citizenship is most closely identified with being a member of a particular nation. To some extent, certain entities cross national boundaries such as trade organizations, non-governmental organizations as well as multi-national corporations, and sometimes the term "citizen of the world" applies in the sense of people having less ties to a particular nation and more of a sense of belonging to the world in general. A skilled Canadian can get a TN visa very quickly because of NAFTA. Otherwise, it's almost impossible, except through marriage, in which case it's again very quick. Q. I am a divorced parent of a 3 year old US citizen. My ex-spouse is a Canadian citizen. He wants our son to become a dual citizen. I am very concerned. Asked by Fred - Wed Mar 4 10:28:09 2009 - - 3 Answers - 0 Comments A. Your son is already a dual citizen if he has one Canadian parent. He just doesn't currently have the paperwork to prove it. Your ex could actually send for this paperwork and get him a Canadian passport but there is nothing for you to be concerned about. If you are worried that he will try to snatch him over to Canada, since Canada has agreements with the US on child custody, the police in Canada would just go get him and bring him back to you. Having dual citizenship means that your son could always go to Canada and study (cheaper) or work (if there is unemployment in the US). I see it as a good thing, not bad.
